I like poems. Not the classical and sometimes theatrical type of poems literature students love to ponder and analyze, but the fun and shallow type that start with phrases like “Roses are red…” or “I slit a sheet…”. You know, the good stuff!!

I know this is not really a poem, but in the vein of all things fun I typed this little rhyming ditty up after I received a couple of phone calls from surprising sources. It seems the world has been embracing our transition over to corporate events (just over two years ago we ‘specialized’) – our specialty is finally resonating with our industry!!

2011 Year End Highlights

Well, it is almost like clockwork, except that it IS clockwork – every year at this time we put off our tax work, try to stop plotting out new year’s business resolutions, and pause for a moment to reflect on the end of the year jussst long enough to give you fine folks some great images here on the blog! Although we are very excited about 2012 – our first year as the official Corporate Event Photographer of the Georgia Chapter of Meeting Planners International (GaMPI) and our first year without a single wedding on the books [that is right – the cousins are ALL married off now!) – here are a few highlights from the end of 2011!

Our good friends at Affairs to Remember put us in touch with Parrish Construction for their big holiday party at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.

It was a very cool venue choice for a holiday party – being able to look out the window or stand at the bar and view the amazing display. I have to admit, I was rather fond of the lights!

The same night, we had photographers capturing events at the Four Seasons Atlanta for WSJ and decor and details for the Atlanta Event Center at Opera!

Next, we were over at the Intercontinental Hotel Buckhead for our good friends over at East Coast Entertainment – capturing decor and details for a fabulous party they were hosting.

Actually, that night was the 10th and it was a BUSY night!! We had multiple photographers capturing corporate events all over the city – here are a few more to enjoy from 200 Peachtree, the Fabulos Fox Theater, the Renaissance Waverly, and the W Midtown.

Next, we were invited to capture a sensational night at the W Hotel Buckhead – the decor was splendid with a super-cool ‘snow-carpet’ entrance!

Then, the last holiday event of our season was for our good friends at Gameplan Financial – a ‘Night at the Oscars’ themed event!

Special thanks go out to all of the AMAZING photographers whom helped us handle the peak season rush: Jamie, Todd, Paul, Dave, Drew, Laura, Eric, Kristen, and Patrick AND to Peter – our fearless production manager whom takes care of all the ‘back-end’ without being a ‘back-end’ about it!!

Pink Power Moms Arrive in Atlanta!

Moms are special people. From the love notes in your lunch box to their all-purpose cleaning saliva, they know how to do just about anything and make you feel like you’re the only person in the world. And that’s exactly how we wanted to make these 40 Pink Power Moms feel during a weekend of festivities and celebrations around Atlanta. For the last 4 years, Kids II, Inc. has honored 8 worthy women who have survived breast cancer and then gone on to do something monumental by presenting them with a $5,000 award and a pampering weekend in Atlanta. This landmark year brought 32 Legacy Moms back to join the 8 new Pink Power Moms in a spectacular 5 Year Anniversary spectacular. Take a look below at the phenomenal photography of Patrick Williams, and a few descriptions of what the Pink Power Mom weekend was all about!

A Successful 16th at St. Regis Atlanta

The 16th Annual Gala of the GACC South or German-American Chamber of Commerce of the Southern U.S. was another wonderful success. The evening was complete with everything expected from the event: dining, dancing and networking, plus a silent auction featuring more than 90 items donated by GACC South affiliates.

It was not just about the getting together, nor the food and the dancing, it was also about giving. This year’s fundraiser, with Mercedes Benz as the display sponsor, aimed to help rebuild the areas in Alabama that were devastated by the tornadoes last spring. The 2011 Gala patron was the German Federal State of Bremen. BLG Logistics, the 2011 Gala partner, sponsored the event with them.

The 2011 Gala was held in the stylish St. Regis Atlanta, a AAA Five Diamond boutique hotel, which was a very fitting venue for this prestigious event.

St. Regis has the ambiance of an elegant and laid back country resort even if it is just a short drive from Atlanta’s favorite hotspots like the Georgia Aquarium and Atlanta’s business and entertainment districts. It has 151 guestrooms, 31 of which are top-rated suites. Each room has luxurious furnishings and is adorned with original art pieces. What more, signature butler service is available for each room. You can expect nothing less of the crowning jewel of Buckhead’s luxury hotels!

One of the highlights of this year’s UTA or Used Truck Association convention was an off-road Jeep tour of the Sonoran Desert, which might have been the same desert that helped inspire the imagery in the song “A Horse With No Name” (America). Unlike the tone of the song, though, the tour was an absolutely awesome experience with real cowboys driving the Jeeps! The tour was organized by Wild West Jeep Tours.

It has been 24 years since the first organizational meeting in Chicago with the Blue Book Advisory Board, and 23 years since it was chartered on May 16, 1988, when it was then known as the Used Truck Sales Network (USTN). The name was changed to NUTA or National Used Truck Association in 1993, and shortened to UTA in 1994.

For 8 consecutive years PWP Studio has captured the UTA Annual Convention, making it the longest running event we’ve been covering. Every year there is a different destination with the same old wonderful people! Last November 2-5, 2011 it was held in the Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Another highlight of the convention was the keynote speaker, who was no less than Tom Flick. Known for delivering speeches that make an impact on everyone in the organization, his message at the convention was very motivational. I especially enjoyed his description and definition of the difference between leadership versus management. We would definitely recommend him as a guest speaker for any group.

Aside from the Jeep tour, the UTA members and guests also enjoyed a Golf Scramble at the Talking Stick Golf Club, a Taliesin West Insight Tour at the foothills of the McDowell Mountains, the River Float which involved a cool ride down the Salt River with a beautiful view of the Arizona desert, and casino lessons from an expert which meant using the complimentary casino chips!

Take a look at some of the images we took when Richard L. Jackson (Chief Executive Officer of Jackson Healthcare) and his lovely wife hosted their annual Halloween party this year for the children of their associates.

There were princesses, football stars, Alice and her entire assortment of friends from Wonderland . pirates and of course plenty of ghosts and goblins. The children in their bewitching costumes and their parents went from department to department and throughout all five floors of their company headquarters uttering the famous words, “Trick or Treat!” It was one of the most effortless, efficient and safest time for the children to go trick or treating.

The trick or treating path eventually wound its way to the office of CEO Richard Jackson. It was here where the kids were treated to their very own special bag of treats followed by a photograph with their parents and Mr. & Mrs. Jackson.

A great time was had by all!

Atlanta Botanical Gardens – Get Your Creative Juices Flowing!!

Every once in a ‘blue moon’ (or red and green Christmas tree in this case), I get truly inspired on a shoot. Such was the case Thursday night at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens!! They have a new Garden Light – Holiday Nights visual spectacular! Here are a couple of my favorites – more to come the full blog post later! And for anyone who is wondering – these images are “straight from the camera”. There is no post production, processing (other than to resize for the web), lightening, darkening, or ANY graphic effects.

Camera Buying Guides for ALL the Santas Out There!

Frequently throughout the year – and especially here around the Holidays – friends, business partners, family, and even complete strangers ask us over here at the studio what kind of cameras we recommend. Where I can discuss and debate the subtle nuances between the $5000 Nikon D3 and the $3000 Nikon D700 all day long – because we use those models every day – I really don’t have a clue what is going on with consumer-targeted [entry level] cameras!

The conversation usually goes something like this…

“I love the D700; it is the most portable of the cameras I use, has an amazing sensor for low-light shooting, fast autofocus, and uses FX lenses.”

“How much is it?”

“The body is $2500 and you can usually get it is a bundled kit for around $3000.”

*Gasp* + silence is generally what I hear the other end of the line… (don’t worry, it’s me not you

After the silence breaks, there is a moment of sharing to follow, “My budget runs between $500 and $1000 for the camera, the memory card, and accessories.”

I reciprocate the sharing, “I am happy to help and certain there are some wonderful cameras in that category, but I don’t even know what the model numbers are…”

Once the sharing is complete and everybody knows my ignorance about their need, the conversation almost always shifts to the topic of whether I would recommend they purchase an entry-level DSLR (digital SLR camera with removable lenses) or a point-and-shoot (uh, point it and shoot).

The bad news: I travel with 150 pounds worth of gear at almost all times, so OF COURSE I am going to recommend top-of-the-line point-and-shoot!
The good news: it is totally a personal decision you have to make, and if you like the way it feels in your hand and you can see yourself toting it on vacation, you probably won’t regret your decision one way or the other.
The REALLY good news: most of the major manufacturers have just recently come out with a MILC; a hybrid type of ultrasmall point and shoot camera with an interchangeable lens system!

Technology… isn’t she beautiful?

In the spirit of being helpful on a subject I know nothing about, I thought I would share a couple of links that came my way just today. I am on the e-mail list for Adorama – camera and technology shop out of New York. They are a very reputable retailer online, and really do a good job of evaluating equipment when it comes out. They provided a great “buying guide” list in their recent e-mail blast, and I’m posting a few of those links here. Reading through all of their information you should gain a great understanding of the differences between the point-and-shoot, DSLR, and the new MILC (Mirrorless Interchangeable-Len Compact) cameras and models. Using the DP Review link below, you can probably find more reviews than you could ever want!

What is Opera like when the sun is out?

We recently blogged about a fabulous event we covered inside the Atlanta Event Center at Opera. Just a few weeks after that we were back, but this time it was for a tasteful outdoor meet and greet.

With the right furniture and friendly weather, the place would be perfect for small to medium gatherings as an outdoors venue. The wonderful ambiance in this part of the venue would serve as a nice pre-event area where guests can have cocktails and mingle before moving on to dinner and the main event inside the Opera.

Loved the Kiwi Mango Soda from South Africa at the Del Monte Fresh Produce Event!

A Legendary Event did it again with fantastic theme-appropriate food and lots of great decor at the 50′s themed Del Monte Fresh Produce client appreciation event. Del Monte also provided some cool theme touches: custom scarves designed with fruits and the Del Monte logo, retro sunglasses for guests, and a few table-tops design elements!

The event was held at Coca-cola’s Taste It! space, where fountains of Coca-cola products from all over the world were also available for sampling (my fav: Kiwi Mango Soda from South Africa!). The venue has a private entrance to its 4,500 square feet area – dotted with gobo holders and flat panel monitors for event branding…because that is what you would expect from a branding powerhouse like Coca-Cola! Taste It! which can normally accommodate 250 guests of a casual reception or 100 guests of a seated dinner, was just right for the Del Monte event’s 60 guests and roaming buffet.

PWP Studio featured roaming event photography and provided an on-site printing station to compliment the 50′s background. Themed prints were made available in black-and-white just like that of films of the era.
